Explaining Socialism To A Republican

I was talking recently with a new friend who I’m just getting to know. She tends to be somewhat conservative, while I lean more toward the progressive side.

When our conversation drifted to politics, somehow the dreaded word “socialism” came up. My friend seemed totally shocked when I said “All socialism isn’t bad”.  She became very serious and replied “So you want to take money away from the rich and give to the poor?”  I smiled and said “No, not at all.  Why do you think socialism mean taking money from the rich and giving to the poor?

“Well it is, isn’t it?” was her reply.

Based on various estimates, 500,000 to 840,000 veterans are homeless at some time during the year. It is also estimated by the VA that a veteran dies by suicide every 80 minutes. And nearly 20% of the returning forces from Afghanistan and Iraq suffer from either PTSD or major depression. This Veterans' Day four or five veterans will commit suicide. The price of war continues throughout the life of a veteran. Today reach out a hand to a vet.

Not Only Did I Think Out Side Of The Box...I Stepped Out Side Of The Box!

I continually get criticism and accusations from the far left saying that I am an Obamabot, believe in Unicorns, probably still believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, am a follower, and can't think for myself because I refuse to "bash" our President.  The truth is I think that "big corporations" invented Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.  I think the religious right fell hook line and sinker for their pagan holidays and gladly feed the corporations while they judge those who step back and watch.  I believe there is a huge difference in not agreeing with our President about all the decisions he has made and "bashing" our President. Most of this criticism comes from my FB and opinions I share there as well as my FB profile. (To make it clear most of the time these are people who are not my daily FB friends)  Some write in friendship and share their opinion but most show their lack of tolerance for others opinions by giving me their thoughts on "my ignorance" for not holding the President "accountable".  They don't seem to understand my capabilities of holding the President accountable while supporting him and helping him make the changes we need.  The far left seems to have a mentality of "Bash and Dash"  (It's a salty mixture of Tacky, Childish,Unattractive and Unproductive!)

Open Letter to that 53% Guy

Hello, I briefly visited the “We are the 53%” website, but I first saw your face on a liberal blog.  Your picture is quite popular on liberal blogs.  I think it’s because of the expression on your face.  I don’t know if you meant to look pugnacious or if we’re just projecting that on you, but I think that’s what gets our attention.

In the picture, you’re holding up a sheet of paper that says:

I felt this belonged in my scrapbook because Don went to school with my older brother and his family was a huge part of our small town growing up in Uravan, Colorado.  I always liked Don and although I have not been back home for years, I always knew in my heart that anyone who would have the word Apothecary in their business name had to be a democrat.  Another reason this story has to be shared...because I think Democrats are far and few between in that area.  -Mem

The right response is never, “I have none,”  since we all do.

Time has the ability to improve what we resist!

I have held firm to my beliefs that President Obama has done for this Country what no other President was able to achieve since Roosevelt.  Just like SSI, the Health Care Reform bill will take time to improve, to work for all people but it has great possibilities, just like SSI!  (Vermont has already paved the way for other states by
passing a bill for single-payer health care.)

Mr. Roosevelt's Social Insurance

This past week, I had the pleasure of a visit to FDR's home and library in Hyde Park, NY. The library was featuring a special exhibit on Social Security, which celebrated its 76th anniversary on August 14. The exhibit brought home to me the importance of this keystone of the New Deal, and reminded me why I am a Democrat.

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.

"She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be an Obama Democrat."

"I am," replied the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct,  but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Republican."

"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You've risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's my fault."

It’s tough being a Progressive these days. Hell, it’s tough being an American these days, but I digress. As Progressives, there is a lot we agree upon – We want fair/progressive taxation. We want multinational corporations to bring jobs back to the US. We want universal healthcare. We want a reliable social safety net. We want equal rights for all. We want clean water and safe food. We want an end to the wars. We want the Bush regime to be tried for their crimes. We want banksters and other corporate masters to be held accountable for their sins…perhaps more importantly, we want their money out of our democracy.

The article I am posting by wolverinethad has been my feelings (minus the F word most of the time) since I left the republican party in 2008.  I know that they don't care!  They only care about the rich, bringing down Obama and taking us back to a time that "freedom" did not exist for many.  The "people" of the teaparty republicans have truly become sheep who are losing their homes, jobs, health and freedom while fighting to keep the rich richer.  They have embraced Sarah Palins "death panel" for themselves, their children and all of America!  They have "fooled" the Right Wing Christians just like the Bible predicted they would and the Right Wing Christians march to the beat of the teaparty republicans Anti-Christ!

(Many don't believe in God, the Bible or the End Times but I say if an Anti-Christ does exist, he exist within the teaparty republicans.  That is my opinion and I won't change that thought based on my spiritual beliefs and research)
