Wednesday, September 3, 2008 - 2:31 p.m. ET Pawlenty Was Thoroughly Vetted as a Potential V.P.

ST. PAUL -- Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, passed over by John McCain for the GOP vice presidential nomination, said that he underwent a "thorough and appropriate" vetting over an extended period of time -- apparently unlike the last-minute background interview and checks made before Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen last Thursday as McCain's running mate.

A somewhat subdued Pawlenty told Washington Post reporters and editors this morning that Palin would "amplify Sen. McCain's strengths" as a maverick and political reformer that would appeal to swing voters, disaffected Democrats and women. But he cautioned that the Republican Party has "lost its way on core issues," including fiscal responsibility and helping middle and lower-income voters.

"We have a party that hasn't done a very good job of coming up with ideas for addressing pocket-book issues," he said.
